Let’s
Go Dancing
It’s time for Christchurch to slip on its dancing shoes! Ball gowns and evening suits will be coming out for the second New Zealand Spinal Trust Charity Ball held on Saturday 28 March at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu. Among the invited guests are television actress Rebecca Hobbs and dance personality Aaron Gilmore who will also be giving a dancing demonstration at the ball. They will appear in this year’s season of TVNZ’s Dancing with the Stars. The pair have nominated the New Zealand Spinal Trust as their chosen charity for 2009 and will give a dancing demonstration during the ball.
Rebecca Hobbs said: “I think the New Zealand Spinal Trust plays a vital role with those people who have a serious spinal cord impairment. Aaron and I are really looking forward to joining the Spinal Trust team and their guests at the charity ball.”
Funds go to support the programmes run by the New Zealand Spinal Trust, including the rehabilitation programme Kaleidoscope, the Allan Bean Centre Library & Information Centre and the Useful People volunteer programme. “In these tightening economic times organisations such as the Spinal Trust need to be more imaginative and creative about how they seek to raise funds,” said Andrew Hall, chief executive of the trust. “We thought that having a great time whilst raising funds was a win-win proposition. Our 2007 ball was a fantastic evening and we are sure that our 2009 ball in March will be even bigger and better.” Organisers aim to host around 300 guests and raise $20,000. The New Zealand Spinal Trust was voted winner of the AMI Insurance Small Charity of the Year at the Champion Canterbury Awards in 2008. The inaugural New Zealand Spinal Trust ball was held in 2007, when 170 guests enjoyed an evening at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu. A short auction and sponsorship from Duncan Cotterill and Hillyers of Lincoln Bakeries meant that the ball raised just over $9, 000 for the Spinal Trust. Top function band Barock will provide the music for this year’s ball and there will be both a ‘silent’ auction and a short ‘live’ auction. Continuous hors d’oeuvres will be served by Alchemy Café, with beer, wine and fruit juice available all evening from the bar.
The 2009 ball starts at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nzspinaltrust.org.nz/ball2009.asp The New Zealand Spinal Trust website can be found at www.nzspinaltrust.org.nz

Work in Progress
Christchurch Art Gallery is currently undergoing a transformation. With all of the downstairs exhibition galleries closed to the public, staff are now dismantling the three summer season shows and preparing to unveil two major new exhibitions. Miles: a life in architecture and Rita Angus: Life & Vision both open to the public on Saturday 7 March. Although at first glance these might seem to be very different exhibitions, throughout both a garden theme can be detected - from the beautiful flower paintings and quintessential New Zealand landscapes of Rita Angus to Ohinetahi, Sir Miles Warren’s spectacular formal garden. This complements the Ellerslie International Flower Show, which will be on in Christchurch from 11-15 March, “It is very rare for us to have all of the downstairs exhibition galleries closed at the same time - but it will certainly be worth it when we unveil the two new exhibitions,” says Gallery Director Jenny Harper
“In the meantime visitors to the Gallery will be directed upstairs, where we still have a number of excellent exhibitions on display. These include let it be now (an exhibition focusing on the work of emerging artists), White on White (an interactive exhibition that is one of a series aimed at encouraging younger audiences to consider the use of colour in art) and Nature’s Own Voice (which features works of art painted outdoors, directly from nature).” The Gallery’s permanent collection galleries will also remain open to the public throughout the downstairs transformations, as will the Gallery Shop and Alchemy Café and Wine Bar.
Rita Angus: Life & Vision
From March Christchurch Art Gallery will host an exhibition of work by one of the leading New Zealand artists of the twentieth century, Rita Angus. Rita Angus: Life & Vision features 143 works drawn from public and private collections throughout New Zealand, in an exhibition developed and presented by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Among the works to be exhibited is the iconic Cass, from Christchurch Art Gallery’s collection and voted New Zealand’s greatest painting in a 2006 television poll. Rita Angus: Life & Vision also presents sketchbooks, studies and unfinished works, which reveal the full scope of Angus’s practice over four decades (1929–1969).
“Rita Angus: Life & Vision offers a compelling look at the work of one of this country’s pioneering modern painters,” says Christchurch Art Gallery Curator Peter Vangioni. “Drawing out the stories behind the paintings, the exhibition reveals Angus’s commitment to pacifism, her strong feminist views, and her spiritual beliefs. Also evident are Angus’s love of nature and her affinity for the New Zealand landscape, as well as her extraordinary technique.” Christchurch Art Gallery Director Jenny Harper says the exhibition is an opportunity for a new generation of New Zealanders to discover the work of this renowned artist, as well as giving those already familiar with Angus’s work the opportunity to see some works that have not previously been exhibited. “Many of her works have helped to form part of our visual identity as New Zealanders and this is a superb opportunity to come along and see the works first hand,” says Jenny Harper. “Even people who think they know the work or style of Rita Angus will be surprised by her achievements and by the diversity of this exhibition.” Admission to the exhibition is free.
Rita Angus: Life & Vision will be at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu
from 7 March until 5 July 2009.

Florilegium at Robert McDougall Gallery
This summer, the 2009 Festival of Flowers, in partnership with the Canterbury Museum, will provide a unique opportunity to view a selection of works from Banks’ Florilegium.
With its roots in James Cook’s 1769–1771 voyage on the HMS Endeavour, this exhibition showcases the first systematic collection and illustration of New Zealand flora. The exquisite copperplate engravings constitute an extensive selection of beautiful and enduring images of many iconic New Zealand plants. The prints are drawn from the collection of the University of Canterbury, and this edition is being exhibited for the first time. Displayed alongside Landcare Research’s – Manaaki Whenua – original 200 year old specimens collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Dr Daniel Solander, they provide a rare glimpse into New Zealand’s botanical history. The engravings are further complemented by paintings of native New Zealand plants by local botanical artists.
Florilegium, curated by Melinda Johnston, runs from 20 February – 22 March, and will provide locals and visitors to the city an opportunity to delve further into the method, the botanical accuracy and the history of Banks’ Florilegium.

Gates to
Ellerslie open in just one month
One month today the gates will open for the 14th Ellerslie International
Flower Show, the stage being set for Christchurch to develop the Southern
Hemisphere’s largest garden show into one of the top five garden shows in the
world. Fifteen months ago Christchurch bought New Zealand’s premier garden event
with two aims:
1. To reclaim and enhance Christchurch’s image as the Garden City; and
2. To develop Ellerslie in to one of the world’s most prestigious garden shows.
With more than 80 horticultural exhibits – including 28 gardens – Ellerslie 2009
will be the biggest in the Show’s 14-year history and it’s guaranteed to wow the
thousands of visitors from throughout New Zealand and overseas. We have begun
our journey in creating a world-class event which is recognised globally. The
2009 Show, while retaining many of the successful features of the past – the
Hort Galore and Floral Art Marquees – also reflects the new southern location
for Ellerslie. This is through the Taste of the South – Show visitors being
treated to the best seasonal fare and some of the south’s award winning wines –
Ellerslie’s partnership with the Christchurch Festival of Flowers which is
celebrating its 20th anniversary season in 2009

Six established sculptors will be exhibiting their work in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens in a new Festival of Flowers event set to inspire, challenge and amuse. Featured artists include Tony Bond, Sean Crawford, Alison Erickson, Hannah Kidd, Ian Lamont and Aaron Te Rangaio. Curated by Lyttelton artist and organiser of Sculpture on the Peninsula Gill Hay, Flora and Forma will enhance one of Christchurch’s best assets, the Botanic Gardens. The exhibition will take you on a sculptural walk through the Gardens and focus attention on both exhibition and permanent sculpture highlighted by seasonal plantings. It will remind locals of the pleasure of wandering through the Gardens and provide visitors with a rich experience of Christchurch as the Garden City.

Breast Cancer Website
The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).
This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. http://www.thebreastcancersite.com
